About Mamajuana

What is Mamajuana?

Mamajuana is the Dominican Republic's national liqueur.

History

One of the first alcoholic beverages in the Americas, Mamajuana is the product of the Taíno People’s herbal tea combined with European alcohol. Thus Mamajuana was born and many Dominicans and began concocting their own homemade recipes.

That was, until Dominican dictator, Rafael Trujillo, caught on to this “epidemic” of the rumored aphrodisiac elixir.

His biggest fear: population growth. As a result, he issued a decree forbidding the sale of Mamajuana without a medical license.

As a result, this legendary liqueur became the signature drink of the Dominican Republic.

Today, Mamajuana can be enjoyed in most resorts in Punta Cana, Bayahibe, La Romana and other tourist destinations.

The 500-year old recipe:

It’s a simple recipe: tree barks + herbs + spices + honey soaked in sugarcane alcohol. Some recipes include wine. Let these ingredients steep and voilà: Mamajuana.

The selection of herbs and barks used in the making of Mamajuana is credited to the native Taíno People. This special combination of sticks, roots and barks are famous for their health benefits.

When paired with alcohol (which extracts the medicinal properties of the herbs and barks), Mamajuana is reported to have curative properties.

Mamajuana has been used as a cold and flu remedy, a digestive and circulatory aid, and most infamously, as a sexual stimulant.

Mamajuana Effects

Famously known for its natural aphrodisiac effects.

In the Dominican Republic, Mamajuana is commonly referred to as the Para Palo (raises your 'stick'), Rompe Cama (bed breaker) and even as far as to call it the Viagra Dominicano (no translation needed).

Mamajuana Benefits

While we cannot confirm nor deny these popular claims, we can attest that historically, the ingredients used in Mamajuana's recipe have been used by Shamans and healers for their health benefits. These ingredients have been used to lower blood pressure and help alleviate the cold and flu.
